Community Needs - Our Why

The Reality for Kids in Our Community

In Grays Harbor County, the start of the school year doesn’t look the same for every child.

Child Poverty & Economic Pressure

  • Over the past 5 years, child poverty rates in Grays Harbor County have consistently ranged between ~18–25%, significantly higher than the Washington State average

  • Many families face seasonal or unstable income, especially in coastal and rural communities

Rising Cost of Back-to-School

  • The average cost to prepare one child for school has increased to $120–$200+ per student

  • Inflation over the last 5 years has driven up:

  • Clothing costs

  • School supplies

  • Transportation + activity fees

What Happens When We Show Up

  • Over the past few years, community-driven programs like this have proven:

  • Kids arrive more confident and engaged

  • Teachers can focus on teaching—not filling gaps

  • Families feel seen, supported, and connected
